Celtic were knocked out of the Europa League despite getting their first victory in the competition following a 2-0 victory over Hapoel Tel-Aviv.
Goals midway through each half by Georgios Samaras and Barry Robson secured a comfortable win but Hamburg’s 2-0 home victory over Rapid Vienna ensured it was in vain.
The triumph was only Celtic’s second in nine European games under Tony Mowbray, who watched Hapoel celebrate their qualification for the group stages despite the Israeli team’s inferiority on the night.
