The Daily Star’s Chief Football writer, Danny Fullbrook, gives his verdict on the four TV Premier League fixtures, starting at Anfield.
Liverpool v Newcastle, Fri 30th, 19.45, Skysports 1
Liverpool (4/7, Ladbrokes) against Newcastle (11/2, Boylesports) kicks off this weekend’s line-up of games on TV and if it is anything like battles between these two in the past it should be a real cracker.
Of course with Luis Suarez suspended it will all be about Andy Carroll up against his old side. But given the way the lanky striker has been playing it is not as if the Toon army should have a lot to worry about.
Carroll has been a disaster and I can’t see why this game should be any different. Demba Ba is the man who replaced Carroll for nothing and has been banging in goals for fun. So much so I fancy him to get the winner on Friday night (8/1 first goal, Totesport) and Newcastle to win 1-0, a massive 14/1 at Skybet.
Man United v Blackburn, Sat 31st, 12.45, ESPN
Manchester United have won their last 2 games by 5-0 margins and they could make it three in a row against Blackburn Rovers. Ladbrokes chalking 16/1 against another 5-0.
Steve Kean’s side are struggling despite their draw at Anfield and will do well to avoid a spanking. It will be interesting to see if they play Berbatov again, and if they do I have him down as first goalscorer, 7/2 with Betfred, with a 3-0 scoreline (6/1, Blue Square).
West Brom v Everton, Sun 1st, 12.30, Skysports 1
The Sunday games will not be as emphatic with West Brom taking on Everton. The Baggies did brilliantly last time out agaisnt Man City and are on a roll, but they find it difficult to win games. At the same time Everton find it hard to score goals.
Sunderland v Man City, Sun 1st, 15.00, Skysports 1
Also on New Year’s Day is Sunderland against Manchester City. Roberto Mancini will have been stunned by the Baggies’ result and not scoring a goal. They will be on all out attack. The Stadium of Light is a tricky place to go but with City in the mood, they are 8/15 to win (bet365), I don’t think the Black Cats will keep them at bay. I fancy Sergio Aguero to score twice (7/2 first goal, Stan James – 9/2 to net twice, Totesport) in a 2-0 win (6/1, )
