Five To Follow On Saturday

Alan Thomson, the former Racing Editor at the Daily Record, puts up five all-weather tips for Saturday from Wolves and Lingfield. View selections below

WITH Britain locked in an icy Arctic grip, it may be prudent to concentrate on the all-weather, with ARCHIE RICE (3.15) looking to extend his winning sequence at Wolverhampton. He keeps confounding the handicapper and another 4lb rise for his latest course and distance victory may not anchor Archie Rice, who kick-started his winning spree in early December. The gelding has gone from strength-to-strength, scoring three more times in fairly emphatic fashion.

MOUNT ABORA (3.45) may not have been suited by a tactical, four-runner affair here on Monday (finished third) and she is worth another chance over this slightly longer trip, especially with Jamie Spencer back on top. Face Value, trained by Gordon Elliott, catches the eye and Jimmy Fortune is a good booking.

McCOOL BANANAS (5.15) keeps hitting the crossbar and ran another gallant race in defeat here five days ago. The top weight must have a solid chance of going one better racing off the same handicap mark in what appears a slightly easier event.

Blue Square also sponsor an interesting, but trappy, card at Lingfield where LUTINE CHARLIE (1.20) can land the seller. Ron Harris’ charge has a good record at the track, making LastkingofScotland pull out all the stops over a furlong less last month and running third to Stevie Gee off a mark of 72 (now 65) in late December. Harris reaches for a first-time visor and 7lb claimer Darren Egan, who rode a winner at Wolverhampton on Thursday, gets the leg up. Principal danger Marvo has finished second in no less than four of his last five starts and look sure to play a prominent role again.

EXEMPLARY (3.35) isn’t the easiest of rides and picked up a modest claimer over two miles here 17 days ago in workmanlike fashion. Mark Johnston drops him back four furlongs but Exemplary isn’t devoid of pace, finishing second in a competitive handicap at Doncaster over 1m 6f in October.
