Brentford came within the width of a crossbar of gaining automatic promotion to the Championship in a remarkable finish to last week’s decider against Doncaster at Griffin Park.
Needing to beat Rovers to go up, the Bees were awarded an injury-time penalty with the game goalless but Marcello Trotta’s spot-kick struck the woodwork and in the ensuing chaos the visitors broke away to seal victory and clinch the League One title, condeming Uwe Rosler’s men to the lottery of the play-offs to boot.
Brentford can’t afford to feel sorry for themselves though and bookies are confident they can bounce back, BetVictor making them 5/2 favourites to emerge triumphant at Wembley in the play-off final.
First though they have to get past Swindon in the semi final and with that defeat to Doncaster potentially weighing heavily on their shoulders, the Bees could be set to make a poor start to the tie as they prepare to visit the County Ground for the first leg.
The Robins are in decent shape on their own patch, where they hammered Crewe and Stevenage in their last couple of home matches and at 13/10 (Coral) Town are worth an interest to capitalise on any lingering psychological scars on Brentford’s part.
Nevertheless, the Bees were one of the division’s toughest teams to beat on the road, losing only six of their 23 travelling assignments and they can keep things close in Wiltshire.
