Everton didn’t make the strongest of starts to the campaign, which was a surprise to many pundits given the quality they showed in Roberto Martinez’s first season in charge. Uncharacteristic defensive frailty was their main issue but the Toffees have since tightened up and they head to Tottenham unbeaten in eight across all competitions.
Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino has come in for some criticism this term and indeed like Martinez, he was expected to have steered his side to a higher league position than the tenth they occupied before this weekend’s fixtures got under way.
