Be quick on the draws at 40/1

Sat 15.00: A draw treble at a whopping 40/1 (bet365) is one of Peter Sharkey’s three Scottish Premiership selections this week.

Three of Saturday’s Premiership fixtures offer punters the opportunity to profit from recent trends, despite one team in each contest considered the clear favourite to secure maximum points.

At Dens Park, for example, Aberdeen are installed as Stan James’s understandable 10/11 favourites to overhaul Dundee (11/4, BetVictor.com), while bet365 chalk 5/2 against the stalemate.

The same 5/2 odds are marked about the draw (also bet365) when Inverness (5/6, Winner.com) host Dundee United (3/1, Skybet), while in the Partick v Kilmarnock duel, a fixture the home team kicks off priced at 11/10 to win (Ladbrokes), bet365 offer 23/10 against the points being shared.

Although in all three matches one team emerges as the clear, stand-out favourite to win, recent evidence suggests these contests will not be the foregone conclusions many pundits expect.

For instance, three of the last five league matches between Dundee and Aberdeen have ended on level terms; the other two were settled by a single goal. Meanwhile, half of the last ten duels between Inverness and Dundee United finished with honours even – the teams were separated by just one goal in the other five – and four of the last seven meetings between Partick and Kilmarnock also ended all-square, with the margin of victory in two of the other three limited to a single goal.

Punters backing the draw in this trio of fixtures (at 5/2, 5/2 and 23/10) could see a handsome return: a £10 win treble, ie supporting the stalemate in all three matches, would, if successful, pay out £404.25, a return on investment significantly greater than that available at your high street bank.

Punters appear less inclined to back the draw in the Ross County v Hamilton contest despite the pair’s last meeting ending two apiece. BetVictor.com have had no hesitation installing Ross as their 5/4 jollies, while Stan James chalk 9/1 against the home side registering a 2-0 victory.

It’s difficult to envisage anything other than a Motherwell win when they travel to St Mirren this weekend, despite their generous-looking 5/4 starting price (Betway). The sides have met three times this season, Motherwell winning all three without conceding a goal. William Hill offer 11/4 about ‘Well winning without conceding again and Paddy Power post an attractive 7/1 against the visitors securing a 1-0 victory.
