York’s Dante meeting gets underway with a typically competitive renewal of the Sky Bet First Race Special Handicap, in which AL NEKSH (2:20) makes plenty of appeal.
William Haggas’ four-year-old looks just the type to improve this term, having won three times from six starts last season. A smooth traveller, it will be a surprise if he can’t score again off his current mark and he can be backed each-way, accordingly.
Later on the card Chessman is sure to be hugely popular in the three-year-old handicap over 7f and, with the form of his Newbury second having been well advertised since, he deserves plenty of respect.
However, at the likely prices, top-weight SENATOR (4:35) is worth chancing on reappearance.
The winner of his first two starts at two, the well bred colt was badly hampered in the Listed Flying Scotsman Stakes when last seen and remains a nice prospect. Again, if possible, he should be backed each-way.
