Market Rasen’s Summer Plate is one of the highlights of the summer jumps season and at this stage I am keen on the chances of Peter Bowen’s Curious Carlos (8/1 with BetVictor) and likely to be 10lbs better off with his Aintree conqueror Mad Jack Mytton for the two-and-a-half lengths he was behind the latter at Aintree. Do note, however, that there is not much pace in the race and I would want to see Little Pop and/or Rossetti make Friday’s line up before recommending an interest.

At Leicester this afternoon, I expect to see a better run from Daira Prince (3.15) after the selection was bogged down on soft ground at York last time. As a son of Dubawi out of a Sadler’s Wells mare, you would expect the Roger Varian-trained 3-year-old to be in his element on soft ground but his Knavesmire run was the second time he has failed to fire on ground with plenty of cut.

The selection gets further than today’s mile and the hope is that jockey Andrea Atzeni makes plenty of use of the selection. Mr Tyrell remains a maiden after eight starts, but has finished in the first three on his last four starts and this return to a mile will suit.

Ryan Moore keeps the ride on Parlance but that filly is likely to be a very short price given her high-profile connections and she must give 12lbs, including jockey’s allowance, to Cheerfilly (3.50) who has been raised 4lbs for breaking her maiden tag over C&D earlier in the month. That win was gained in first-time cheek-pieces and the hope is that Tom Dascombe has found the key to his daughter of Excelebration.

Shootingthebreeze (7.15) shaped with considerable promise when fourth at Haydock over seven furlongs earlier in the month when well supported in the market. He can leave that form behind at Doncaster this evening for Tom Dascombe and a syndicate that includes former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson – do note he drops back in trip to six furlongs this evening.

Firefright (7.50) broke his maiden on Town Moor when scoring over C&D back in April and he also run well here as a juvenile when third in a valuable sales’ event. William Buick takes over in the plate for the first time tonight for Jeremy Noseda’s lightly-raced three-year-old.

I was thinking of giving First Voyage another chance having unseated Buick leaving the stalls at Yarmouth last time. The gelding had previously finished third on his seasonal reappearance at Haydock but I just wonder whether he might want softer ground to be seen at his best. Vernatti (8.20) has won her last two and is taken to defy an 8lbs rise for making all at Leicester under regular pilot Rob Hornby.

Buick takes over on Ed Vaughan’s Astute Boy (8.50) and I suggest we take the hint. The selection finished runner up on his handicap/seasonal bow at Lingfield and he is entitled to improve with that experience under his belt.

There is a terrific Beginners Chase at Killarney and Bilko (3.40) can go one better than when runner up on his chase debut at Punchestown at the end of May. That was a good first run over the larger obstacles and jockey Bryan Cooper could do with a winner, as I’m not convinced he is riding as well as he can at present.
