There’s a cracking seven-race card at Newbury where I’m very sweet on the chances of Godolphin’s Dubhe (1.40) the first division of the 7f maiden. There isn’t a better bred horse on the card, with the Dubawi colt the first foal of Irish Oaks winner Great Heavens, and connections are likely to have similar classic aspirations next season. Entered in both the National Stakes and next year’s Derby; he looks smart enough to make a winning debut.

The boys in blue can complete a quick-fire double with Stage Magic (2.10) under the excellent William Buick. Much like stablemate Dubhe, Charlie Appleby’s colt is another beautifully-bred juvenile and, after last month’s excellent second on debut at Haydock, can go one better in the second division of the 7f maiden.

Hughie Morrison’s Admiral’s Sunset (3.15) looked in need of further when staying on to finish fourth in last month’s Carlisle Plate over a mile and a half, and must go close under William Buick in the £25,000 Fillies’ Handicap. She made a winning reappearance over this afternoon’s trip at Bath and should remain competitive from a 7lb higher mark. At her tissue price of 10/1 with BetVictor, she can hopefully make the frame and reward each-way support.

The feature Rose Bowel Stakes can go the way of Madeline (3.50) for the in-form team of Roger Varian and Andrea Atzeni. The Kodiac filly built on her maiden success at Goodwood by finishing an excellent fifth in the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot, with the form of the Gp 2 contest already franked by the Ballydoyle pair of Clemmie and Asking both scoring in group company thereafter. She is a confident selection to gain some invaluable black type for connections.

Robert Cowell’s unbeaten sprinter Storm Over is likely to be a short-priced favourite to complete the hat-trick at Haydock however, I expect Martin Harley to work his magic aboard Michael Bell’s Merlin (2.55) for Her Majesty the Queen. The son of Oasis Dream has progressed on each of his four starts this season; second on his reappearance at Redcar before following-up with impressive over 6f at Nottingham and 7f here at the track last month. He was unlucky to bump into last time out at Newmarket and, with the form of that race already boosted, he must go close to defying a further 3lb rise at the weights.

Our Man in Havana (6.30) did column readers a favour when landing a gamble for the Tom Dascombe yard last time out at Haydock, and should be able to follow-up in the opener at Pontefract. The selection was progressive in maiden company, before landing the first nursery of the season under Richard Kingscote. Back in novice company, he can defy a penalty under the excellent Kingscote.

Les Eyre’s Cote D’Azure (8.05) will relish Pontefract’s stiff finish and looks competitive from a mark of 94 under Jason Hart. The selection won a similar race earlier in the season at Thirsk from just a pounder higher mark and will relish the return to a sounder surface.

Hamilton stages one of its biggest cards of the season, where Roger Varian’s Defoe (7.55) is a confident selection to land the feature Listed Glasgow Stakes under Andrea Atzeni. After making a winning reappearance in the London Gold Cup at Sandown, he then followed-up by defying a 10lb hike at the weights last time out at York and can complete the hat-trick upped in grade.

Naggers would want a bit more juice in the ground to enhance his chances in the Scottish Steward’ Cup and, on ground currently described as good-to-firm, he has to be opposed in favour of Richard Fahey’s unexposed Six Strings (7.20) from the foot of the weights. The selection chased home subsequent scorer Parfait on his handicap debut at Newmarket and can reward each-way support under Paul Hanagan.
