Five to follow on Saturday

WEST OF THE EDGE (3.35) is fancied to land the feature Betfred Midlands Grand National at Uttoxeter.

Dr Richard Newland’s gelding looked the most likely winner of the Eider Chase at Newcastle when hitting the front before two out but he couldn’t match the finishing kick of strong-travelling Baywing.

West Of The Edge found only Emperor’s Choice too good in the Haydock mud at the end of December and he won by eight lengths over 3m 5f at Warwick this time last year.

Newland also saddles Bob Ford with a chance under Sean Bowen.

The Artful Dodger has crept into the race the foot of the weights and Henry Daly’s gelding should cope with this 4m 2f slog.

The seven-year-old has racked up a hat-trick of wins this season at Ludlow, Warwick and Lingfield (very heavy) and his light weight is a bonus in such a war of attrition.

The betting prefers Daly’s other runner, Back To The Thatch, while unexposed Billy Bronco could well outrun his odds.

Get On The Yager’s battling victory over Sue Smith’s Wakanda in the Rowland Meyrick at Wetherby on Boxing Day is looking even better given the runner-up’s success in the Skybet Chase.

JP McManus’s FLEMINPORT (3.00) landed short odds with little fuss at Lingfield (heavy) last month and has a handy weight in the Betfred Handicap Hurdle.

Horses balloted out at Cheltenham get their day in the sun at Kempton and BRANDON HILL (3.15) may be hard to peg back in the 2m 4f Matchbook Silver Bowl.

He tried to make all over three miles last month, only to be collared by Bigbadjohn. It was 27 lengths back to the third and Brandon Hill’s trainer Tom George remains on a high following the terrific runs of Summerville Boy and Black Op at Cheltenham.

KILDISART (2.40) blundered away a potentially winning chance two out at Ascot but compensation may await in the Silver Plate.

Ben Pauling’s six-year-old has been a model of consistency this season and the horse which finished just in front of him at Ascot, Stowaway Magic, ran a cracker in the Coral Cup at Cheltenham.

Just A Sting may have got into his first handicap on a winning mark following a fine third to the very smart Vinndication at Ascot in January.

CHOSEN PATH (3.50), a course and distance third to OK Corral last month, looks one for Alan King in the novices’ hurdle.
