Five to follow on Saturday

Alan Thomson, the former Racing Editor at the Daily Record, puts up five tips at Royal Ascot on Saturday. View selections below.

TWILIGHT SON (4.20) is a sprinter with a penchant for easy ground so there is every reason to think he can bounce back to form in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes.

Henry Candy was horribly out of form in the early weeks of the season but his horses are buzzing again and he is taken to eke his revenge after York on the resurgent Magical Memory.

The Wokingham Stakes isn’t for the faint-hearted with a maximum field spread across Berkshire. DIVINE (5.00) hails from the in-form Mike Channon operation and she pulverised some smart Irish fillies in a Group 3 at the Curragh 13 days ago.

Interception had Divine in arrears when winning last year’s Wokingham and should be on the premises once again. David Lanigan has kept him under wraps this year and Interception will be all the better for a recent outing at Haydock. They are my two ew against the field.

ORIENTAL FOX (5.35) must have an outstanding chance of repeating last year’s success in the Queen Alexandra Stakes. Few flat horses at this level possess the combination of speed and stamina to win over 2m 6f and Mark Johnston has had this event earmarked all season. The rain was falling when Oriental Fox hosed up last year so softish ground is ideal. Classy Clondaw Warrior is the pretty obvious alternative from the powerful Willie Mullins yard.

Underfoot conditions will suit MALEFICENT QUEEN (3.05) in the Wolferton Handicap and Keith Dalgleish’s mare could well have slipped under the radar against some of the big battalions.

She is on a six-timer and hosed up in a Listed contest at Ayr last time. She just keeps on improving and must be bet ew.

EAGLE TOP (3.40) got himself involved in a controversial barging match with Postponed in last year’s Hardwicke Stakes, effectively gifting the race to the admirable Snow Sky. There should be no such shenanigans here and John Gosden’s copper-plated Group performer can provide ‘Mr Ascot’ Frankie Dettori with another big Saturday scalp.
