Five to follow on Saturday

Alan Thomson, the former Racing Editor at the Daily Record, puts up five tips at Chepstow and Sandown on Saturday. View selections below.

FINAL NUDGE (2.05) should give a prominent show in the Coral Welsh Grand National at rain-soaked Chepstow.

Trainer David Dennis gave his gelding a comeback run in the Badger Ales Trophy at Wincanton and Final Nudge ran a cracker, going down by a head to the bang in form Present Man.

The nine-year-old, a dual winner on soft/heavy last season, was still in contention when falling four out in the Midlands National at Uttoxeter. Final Nudge is now 13lb better off with winner Chase The Spud and rates some each-way value in a wide-open renewal.

At Sandown, CALL ME LORD (3.35) can restore his reputation after disappointing at odds-on at Huntingdon.

Nicky Henderson’s five-year-old is a course and distance winner, beating Dolos and Fidux last April, and scored on soft in his native France.

WESTERN RYDER (2.25) looks a worthy favourite in the 32Red Tolworth Novices’ Hurdle.

Fifth in last year’s Champion Bumper at Cheltenham, Western Ryder has won his last two over hurdles on deep ground at Chepstow and Cheltenham. He could have the edge over Kalashnikov, unbeaten in three runs for Amy Murphy, and particularly impressive on a sounder surface at Doncaster last time out.

HITHERJACQUES LADY (12.45) has a bit to find on official figures but will have conditions to her liking in the mares’ hurdle.

Oliver Sherwood’s six-year-old made a pleasing comeback at Ascot, leading until headed at the last by Graceful Legend and Jester Jet. The ground was riding much faster that day and front-running Hitherjacques Lady won both her novice hurdles on heavy.

The 32Red Veterans’ Handicap Chase Final has attracted some of the most popular old jumpers in training and sprightly 14-year-old Pete The Fete is bidding to follow-up last year’s success. The old boy was a 20-1 chance and has since scored again at 25-1 over course and distance.

PERFECT CANDIDATE (3.00) shoulders top weight but this sprightly 11-year-old jumped like a stag when holding the renewed effort of Vicente in the 3m 3f BetVictor Chase at Cheltenham in November.

My selection does most of his racing at Cheltenham these days but posted an easy win at right-handed Exeter, so Sandown shouldn’t present any problem.
