Terrific card from Haydock and I am keen on the chances of Rundell (2.40) in the 12 handicap; the selection has only raced three times but is clearly going the right way having finished runner up at York last time when carried across the course. He has been raised 4lbs for that effort. Flashheart is another open to considerable improvement but the Hannon horse gets the nod.

The Group 2 Betfred Temple Stakes over the flying five furlongs is one of the best sprints of the year; Irish raider Sole Power ( 3.50) 2/1 at BetVictor loves to hear his hooves rattle and was a ready winner on fast ground at Newmarket last time. He is totally ground dependent but there is little rain forecast between now and post time and he must run well.

Reckless Abandon won all five starts as a 2-y-old and I am slightly surprised to see him back at the minimum trip for his reappearance; he is 3/1 at BetVictor and is a fascinating contender but he could set the race up for the favourite who looked, arguably, better than ever at Newmarket.

The Betfred sponsored Silver Bowl is the big betting race on the card; a low draw is considered a big advantage in such a competitive heat and despite the fact that he is worse off with Baltic Knight on previous Newbury running I fancy Here Comes When (3.15) who was impressive at Chester last time. The selection is 5/1 at BetVictor and with ¼ odds first four I would be disappointed if he wasn’t involved in the shake-up.

His draw in stall 10 is less than ideal (Baltic Knight 3) but he has the potential to be more than just a handicapper and he gets the vote. Near the foot of the weights Code Of Honour who has the plum draw in stall 1 is surely better than he showed at Kempton on his reappearance and he is one to keep on the right side of going forward.

Enobled (6.00) ran out an easy winner at Goodwood on his reappearance and he toyed with a decent Cecil-trained yardstick on that occasion; the selection could be heading to Royal Ascot for the Britannia Handicap.

Afsare is the obvious candidate in the Goodwood opener but Newmarket handler Roger Varian has his team in rude health and a chance is taken on Cameron Highland (2.05) especially as there is rain forecast at the Sussex track on Friday; the 4-y-o is reported to be working well ahead of his reappearance and he must run well.

Cousin Khee (3.05) has only been raised 2lbs for his York win when he looked an unlikely winner for much of the race; the step up to 1m 6f looks sure to help and the booking of Mikael Barzelona suggests connections are expecting another bold show.

Sir Michael Stoute’s horses continue to run well and Enobled (6:00) looked a horse full of potential when winning at Goodwood earlier in the month.

The third has come out and won well since and the nicely bred Dansili colt should be tough to beat in the concluding handicap at Haydock off an opening mark of 89.

With Ryan Moore in action at York, William Buick takes the mount and the selection was trading at 6/4 on Friday evening.

Over at the Curragh Aidan O’Brien holds a very strong hand in the Listed Marble Hill Stakes, saddling last Sunday’s impressive winner Stubbs alongside Coach House (2:15) but Joseph appears to have chosen right and the Oasis Dream colt can maintain his progression.

Runner-up on debut to Fast In The Wind, who re-opposes today, he beat a subsequent winner hollow, with fourth home Treadstone going on to finish runner-up to Stubbs. On a line through that rival, Coach House has his stable-mate’s measure and was trading at Evs with Paddy Power overnight.

SOLE POWER (3.50) encounters the slick underfoot conditions he prefers and looks a solid wager to justify favouritism in the Betfred Temple Stakes at Haydock. The Irish raider mopped up this Group 2 prize in 2011 and was a shade unfortunate not to repeat the feat last year, going down by a neck to market rival Bated Breath after taking a hefty bump at the start. Sole Power underlined his wellbeing by landing the Palace House Stakes at Newmarket three weeks ago, again on quick ground. Fran Berry gets the leg up for the first time and will be under instructions to deliver his mount fast and late as usual.

REDVERS (5.30) doesn’t win too often but performed well in this 7f handicap last year, running on into fifth. His seasonal debut was full of promise, finishing fourth in the Betfred Victoria Cup at Ascot, with top weight King Of Eden well held in arrears.

On a super Saturday of top action, ROMAN FLIGHT (4.00) looks the standout bet at York. David O’Meara consistently waves his magic wand with these handicappers and Roman Flight simply blew away the opposition at Thirsk a fortnight ago. Despite Danny Tudhope taking his foot off the pedal close home, my selection still had six lengths to spare over Reflect (fine second at Haydock on Thursday) and Arizona John, an emphatic Pontefract winner on Tuesday evening. The handicapper has put him up 10lb but even that hefty burden may not anchor Roman Flight.

The biggest week in the training career of Karl and Elaine Burke is looming next Saturday, with Libertarian lining up in the Investec Derby. The stable has been in tremendous form and SUNNYBRIDGE BOY (5.10) can keep up the good work on the Knavesmire, with top amateur Simon Walker booked for the 1m 2f handicap. Sunnybridge Boy finished a narrow runner-up in an apprentices’ event at Pontefract 24 days ago and this rider is worth a few pounds in the saddle.

Rain is forecast in the south and that will be music to the ears of Ray Beckett, who saddles ALBERT BRIDGE (3.05) at Goodwood. His stayer is totally ground dependent and the five-year-old has had only 10 career starts, winning in the mud at Newbury and Ayr. Albert Bridge almost added to that tally when crossing the Irish Sea last November, failing by a neck to land an 18-runner soft ground handicap at Leopardstown.

When the draw for the semi-finals of the Champions League was made, keeping Barcelona and Real Madrid apart, pundits salivated at the prospect of an ‘El Clasico’ final at Wembley. Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund however, had other ideas and as a result, European club football’s top prize will be going to one of the Bundesliga giants on Saturday evening.

As German champions, Bayern are odds-on favourites at 5/6 with Ladbrokes to prevail in normal time while BetVictor post 4/1 against Dortmund and it’s 14/5 via Stan James to be all square after 90 minutes.

The latter might attract cash given that both league renewals between the two were inconclusive and similarly a repeat of the 1-1 scoreline from those stalemates might prove popular at 15/2 (BetVictor).

However, in two cup meetings it was Jupp Heynckes’s team that emerged triumphant and after they defeated Barca 7-0 on aggregate in the last four, they have to be fancied to go on and lift the trophy.

Bet365 go 11/4 about Bayern shading it by a one-goal margin and as the two teams possess a significant attacking threat, it looks likely that they will each find the net, an outcome Stan James chalk up at 4/6. In turn, that lends appeal to a 2-1 Munich success at 8/1 via BetVictor and Skybet mark 4/1 against the favourites eventually clinching victory following an even first period.

Ultimately, Heynckes’s ultra-consistent side should just have too much going forward, especially as Dortmund’s rearguard has hinted at some vulnerability in the last couple of rounds and Stan James rate the Reds at a safe-looking 8/11 to notch at least twice at Wembley.

More specifically, Arjen Robben has struck three times in his last four outings, including both legs against Barcelona, so he stands out at 5/2 with bet365 to find the net at any stage and Thomas Muller is 12/5 at Skybet to score at some point. Alternatively, the duo are 7/1 and 13/2 respectively courtesy of William Hill to break the deadlock.
