Five to follow on Saturday

Alan Thomson, the former Racing Editor at the Daily Record, puts up five tips at Beverley, Sandown and Chester on Saturday. View selections below.

GOOD BIRTHDAY (2.05) hasn’t managed to supplement his seasonal debut success at Doncaster but he can put that right in the William Hill Silver Cup at Beverley. This Class 2 handicap has attracted quite a strong field and Good Birthday will need to be in the sort of form that saw him run a close third to Headman and Sinjaari in the London Gold Cup at Newbury in May. Andrew Balding’s colt didn’t stay 12 furlongs when unplaced at Royal Ascot but this shorter trip is ideal. Desert Icon looks the one to beat, with Dark Vision another worth a shout.

The Beverley Bullet Sprint Trophy can fall to DANZENO (3.15). Mick Appleby’s eight-year-old lost out in a blanket finish to the Shergar Cup Dash at Ascot when a slow start didn’t help his cause. Stall nine is usually a negative but showers are forecast which often leads to winners racing away from the favoured far rail. Market leader Tis Marvellous has been at the top of his game on slick surfaces for Clive Cox but soft ground would be a concern.

At Sandown, three-year-olds should dominate the finish of the Class 2 handicap over ten furlongs, with MIGRATION (2.25) getting the nod over Country. Migration was nicely backed when recording a course and distance victory three weeks ago and must go well off a 5lb higher mark. Country has won his last three races and beat subsequent scorer Cardano at Redcar. William Haggas also had him entered in the big handicap at Beverley but Country comes here instead.

JUBILOSO (3.00) was an expensive failure at Goodwood when backed as if defeat was out of the question. She had no luck in running, however, and compensation awaits in the Betway Atalanta Stakes, a Group 3 contest for fillies and mares over a mile. Sir Michael Stoute has a fine record in the race and he teamed up with Jubiloso’s rider Ryan Moore to land this prize last year with Veracious.

In the Sportpesa Chester Stakes, OUTBOX (2.45) looks one for favourite backers. Simon Crisford’s four-year-old finished a close third behind Kelly’s Dino and Corelli at Newmarket and this son of Frankel can see off Dermot Weld’s Irish raider Stivers.
