Three to follow on Tuesday

The feature race at Hamilton this afternoon is a £30,000 mile handicap. The ground was described as good to firm on Monday morning but there is the prospect of significant rain ahead of their seven-race card.

Ghaly has his first start for 662 days for Saeed bin Suroor, but it is possible that he is a different class to this afternoon’s rivals. Lightly raced, he has winning form on fast and heavy ground and after just five starts on turf he is open to significant improvement and his long absence is of no concern given he represents such an inform stable.

Kevin Stott takes over in the saddle for the first time this afternoon, he looks to have a good draw in stall one – he can lead – and he has been well backed in the opening exchanges – 9/4 from 11/4 with William Hill. He might be a shade too short for his reappearance and I will look for an each way alternative.

The more rain the better for EMPIRESTATEOFMIND who finished last of eight at Sandown last time, but was beaten less than three lengths on ground faster than ideal. He has been dropped 1lb for that effort, regular pilot Jason Hart is back in the plate and, as long as there is a bit of cut in the ground, he can run a big race on his first start at Hamilton Park.

Recommendation: 2.45 Hamilton – Empirestateofmind EW

You can tell this 0-60 handicap isn’t the best race ever staged at the track when you consider The Green Amigo has not yet beaten a rival in three starts – last of ten, last of seven and last of 9 – and is just 5/1 for his handicap debut. A son of Frankel, who gets more than his fair share of winners at the trip, he steps up in distance to 12f for the first time, but preference is for top-weight EDINBURGH ROCK.

The selection is another making his handicap debut having been beaten nearly 15L when fifth in a decent Goodwood maiden last time. Rob Hornby takes over in the plate for Ralph Beckett and he spoke very well and professionally after being jocked off from Westover in the Irish Derby at the weekend.

Edinburgh Rock is a half-brother to the useful Kipps and, while he is also not certain to appreciate this trip, I would expect him to race less prominently than was the case at Goodwood last time when he went from the front.

Purple Reign heads the market for Ed Dunlop and he looks the main danger with Richard Kingscote considered a positive booking.

Recommendation: 7.30 Chepstow – Edinburgh Rock

Captain Ivan heads the market for the 2m 4f handicap chase but is surely worth taking on having put the brakes on when unseating Adam Wedge at the first at Southwell last time. Laura Morgan must be hoping the first-time visor works the oracle.

CREMONT won over hurdles from this mark at Aintree last time and reverts back to fences today at a track where he won on his sole previous visit over timber. A winner between the flags in his native Ireland the selection disappointed at Uttoxeter when last seen over the larger obstacles but he showed promise at Worcester on his chase debut last summer and looks fairly treated on that effort. Good ground clearly suits, and he can race off a mark 4lbs lower than his current hurdles rating.

Recommendation: 7.50 Stratford – Cremont
