GROCER JACK (3.00) can win a competitive renewal of the Group 3 1m 2f Rose Of Lancaster Stakes at Haydock.

The William Haggas-trained five-year-old followed his fourth in a Group 2 contest at Chantilly in early June by powering well clear of Finest Sound and Cadillac in a Listed race at Newbury three weeks ago.

There are a few live dangers, mainly last autumn’s Cambridgeshire Handicap runner-up Anmaat, who had re-opposing Intellogent close behind in third when beating 21 rivals in the John Smith’s Cup at York. Intellogent was held up well off the pace that day and is now 2lb better off. Jane Chapple-Hyam’s horses continue in terrific form.

PLAYDAY (4.10), a daughter of Frankel, has been something of a slow burner but the penny seems to have dropped judged on last month’s Leicester victory when making all the running to beat Sir Mark Prescott’s Snap Ambush. Recent winners Benjamin Bear and Tessy Lad can help make the market.

Ascot hosts the annual Shergar Cup international riders’ fixture and the Haggas camp saddle PRIDE OF PRIORY (3.20) with sound claims in the 1m 4f handicap. My selection found himself short of room on the rails a furlong out at Newcastle last time but quickened smartly when switched to collar fancied Thundering close home.

The Whipmaster was denied a five-timer when beaten by Juan De Montalban over today’s course and distance 15 days ago and can go well along with northern raider Charging Thunder, successful on three of his last four starts.

The Shergar Cup Mile on the round course can fall to MONTASSIB (3.55), the mount of Danny Tudhope. The four-year-old mopped up his first three races before being aimed at two of the summer’s major handicaps. He was sent to Royal Ascot for the 29-runner Buckingham Palace Stakes, running a highly creditable fifth to Inver Park, and then backed that up by finishing fourth in the Bunbury Cup at Newmarket.

Isla Kai, the mount of Frankie Dettori, scored over course and distance last July and produced a creditable fourth when sent off favourite at York four weeks ago.

The 1m 4f Classic sees BERKSHIRE BREEZE (4.30) bidding to snap a frustrating run of placed efforts. Andrew Balding’s colt was an unlucky loser here last time, being denied a clear run at a vital stage before failing agonizingly to catch Bague D’Or.

Jamie Spencer rides Hamaki for the Haggas operation and his mount steps up in trip on the back of his latest success over ten furlongs at Haydock.

Tally Ho
