TEA FOR FREE (3.15) has been one of the big success stories of the season and can rack up his fifth straight success by bagging the Sky Bet Chase at Doncaster.

Charlie Longsdon’s gelding clearly goes well for regular jockey Lilly Pinchin and they made all to come home more than six lengths clear four weeks ago at Newbury. Tea For Free had earlier won over 3m 2f at Uttoxeter so stamina should not be an issue.

Java Point finished third on his reappearance over 2m 6f at Newbury in late November and the step up to three miles proved no barrier when finishing a close second at Cheltenham on New Year’s Day.

Last year’s winner Windsor Avenue has been out of form and bigger threats should emerge in the shape of favourite Ga Law, now stepping markedly up in trip, and Nicky Henderson’s consistent Mister Coffey.

The Grade 2 Albert Bartlett River Don Novices’ Hurdle over three miles has attracted a classy 10-runner field and Irish raider GRAND SOIR (2.40) can put up a bold show.

John McConnell’s gelding is going for his fourth seasonal success and stayed on well to fend off Gordon Elliott’s Level Neverending at Thurles on his latest outing.

Paul Nicholls strips his unexposed Newbury novice hurdle victor Away Fay, while Idalko Bihoue wasn’t disgraced when running third in the Challow Hurdle at Newbury four weeks ago. The winner, Hermes Allen, is useful and Idalko Bihoue shouldn’t be far away for the Nigel Twiston-Davies yard.

The two-mile novices’ chase, another Grade 2 contest, can fall to BOOTHILL (1.35).

Harry Fry has sent out the gelding to win three of his last four starts and Boothill edged clear of Aucunrisque at Kempton’s showpiece Christmas fixture.

Course and distance winner Tommy’s Oscar landed the odds in the Grade 2 Unibet Hurdle at Haydock last January and chased home re-opposing Since Day One at Newcastle last time. He meets the winner on much more advantageous terms.

IL RIDOTO (1.50) can continue his progress as an exciting young chaser by bagging the 2m 4f Paddy Power-sponsored handicap on Cheltenham’s nine-race Trials Day card.

Paul Nicholls’s six-year-old blundered away his chance at the last fence before fading into fourth in the Paddy Power Gold Cup here in November. Il Ridoto was then involved in a bumping match with a couple of his rivals in another competitive contest here won by Midnight River and should be in the firing line once again turning for home.

Fergal O’Brien’s Karl Philippe stayed on well into second under a big weight at Wetherby on Boxing Day and Jack Hogan’s 5lb claim should make the eight-year-old competitive at double-digit odds.

William Hill go six places each-way, with most other firms offering five spots.

PROTEKTORAT (2.25) will be hard to topple in the 3m 1f Cotwolds Chase, despite the presence of Grand National winner Noble Yeats and four other talented rivals.

Dan Skelton’s stable star, placed in last March’s Gold Cup behind A Plus Tard and Minella Indo, could hardly have been more impressive on his return to action when powering clear in the Betfair Chase at Haydock in November.

Sean Bowen has struck up a fine relationship with Noble Yeats and the combination are on a hat-trick following victories at Wexford and Aintree. The Emmet Mullins-trained eight-year-old rates a bigger threat than talented northern raiders Ahoy Senor and Sounds Russian.

Popular Frodon finished more than 18 lengths behind Protektorat at Haydock and it is hard to envisage him reducing that deficit.

Tally Ho
