Five to follow on Saturday

Alan Thomson, the former Racing Editor at the Daily Record, puts up five racing tips at Southwell and Chelmsford on Saturday. View selections below.

LORD NORTH (3.20) can back up last year’s victory in the 1m 3f BetUK Winter Derby at Southwell.

The Group 3 contest switches from its previous home at Lingfield but that should not present a problem as Rab Havlin’s mount boasts winning form on a variety of all-weather surfaces. Lord North has not been seen since landing a Group 1 event at Meydan last March but goes well fresh.

Charlie Appleby’s Military Order was a beaten favourite over course and distance in late January but will strip fitter under Danny Tudhope.

With so much heavy ground around on turf it may be prudent to stick to synthetic surfaces and the 13-runner 1m 3f handicap offers some bigger prices. ARTISAN DANCER (4.30) has enjoyed a consistent run of form for Charlie Johnston, scoring at Newcastle and Wolverhampton this winter, and can go close under Jason Hart.

The gelding, a previous course and distance winner, should confirm places with recent Wolverhampton runner-up Aqwaam.

Cello is an interesting contender hailing from Andrew Balding’s yard and moves into handicap company after pulling more than three lengths clear in a Kempton novice stakes last January. The market should prove a guide to his fitness following that lengthy break.

Valsad and Howth are tightly matched on their run behind Queen Of Ipanema over course and distance in January.

Another big field heads to post for the two-mile handicap and PALACE BOY (5.05) can handle the 6lb rise imposed after his recent comfortable Wolverhampton victory when mastering in-form Artisan Dancer.

Haveyoumissedme has been performing consistently when tackling shorter distances lately but this step up in trip should suit as Iain Jardine’s gelding is a previous winner over two miles at Newcastle last September.

Spartan Army displayed a good attitude when scoring at Lingfield almost three weeks ago and is another to consider.

Earlier on the card, CLARENDON HOUSE (2.45) can justify favouritsm in the 5f BetUK Hever Stakes.

The gelding faces 12 rivals but has plenty in hand on official figures. Robert Cowell’s charge drew two lengths clear of re-opposing Bedford Flyer over course and distance before Christmas and re-opposes on much more advantageous terms. This is a drop in class following his trip to Meydan in late January when running very well in a Group 2 contest.

At Chelmsford City, SIXTIES CHIC (5.50) is taken to supplement last week’s clear-cut Wolverhampton success when lining up in the Betting.Bet Fillies’ Handicap.

Jack Channon’ sprinter shoulders a big weight but can confirm form with runner-up Back Tomorrow, despite clashing on 6lb worse terms.

Tally Ho
