Five to follow on Saturday

Alan Thomson, the former Racing Editor at the Daily Record, puts up five racing tips at Doncaster, Newbury and Newmarket on Saturday. View selections below.

Doncaster’s eight-race twilight card opens with a 1m 4f apprentice handicap and DAMASCUS STEEL (4.57) bounced back to winning form at Kempton ten days ago.

Ed Dunlop’s grey gelding has been hit with a 5lb rise but faces some modest rivals under Morgan Cole.

The Dancing Poet mopped up an ordinary handicap at Musselburgh a couple of weeks ago but could manage only eighth spot in this event 12 months ago.

Harry Charlton fields Baltic, a Pontefract scorer last September, and the trainer hands the mount to Millie Wonnacott under her useful 3lb allowance.

INTO BATTLE (3.00) can outrun his big odds in Newbury’s London Gold Cup, one of the hottest three-year-old handicaps on the early-season calendar.

It often takes a horse on the cusp of Group class to land the 1m 2f contest and Ed Walker’s son of Churchill showed a brave attitude to hold off Midair at Epsom last month. That runner-up was an unlucky-in-running fourth at Ascot last weekend so the form appears reliable.

Aidan O’Brien saddles ante-post favourite Chantilly and his colt is entered up in the Irish Derby and Eclipse. There was plenty to like about his wide-margin Leopardstown victory in early April, even though the runner-up was well held in a subsequent maiden event.

King’s Gambit, a course regular for Harry Charlton, can give William Buick a good spin, while Poniros is also worth a second look, with Ralph Beckett’s string running into form.

POKER FACE (3.35) is another smart sort trading at attractive odds elsewhere on the card and Simon and Ed Crisford’s five-year-old can put up a stout performance in the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes.

My selection will need to overturn recent Sandown form with Charyn but will strip sharper for that introductory effort.

Classy market principals Inspiral and Big Rock have yet to run this season but require maximum respect.

The fixture’s curtain-raiser, the 1m 4f Aston Park Stakes, features several smart middle-distance horses and Beckett’s SALT BAY (1.50) made a pleasing comeback here four weeks ago when hitting the frame behind classy Hamish.

Royal runner Desert Hero also made a promising return to action when just denied at Sandown and sets a decent standard.

At Newmarket, SO LOGICAL (2.05) has been given a chance by the assessor in the seven-runner JenningsBet Handicap.

The filly, representing John and Thady Gosden, scorched more than seven lengths clear of her nearest rival at Newcastle but her rating remains untouched. The booking of Hollie Doyle for the bottom weight is an added bonus.
