Five to follow on Saturday

Alan Thomson, the former Racing Editor at the Daily Record, puts up five racing tips at Newmarket, York and Ascot on Saturday. View selections below.

INISHERIN (4.35) hasn’t looked back since Kevin Ryan sent him sprinting and the colt can justify favouritism in the Group 1 July Cup at Newmarket.

He towered over his rivals in the Sandy Lane at Haydock on soft ground and again dominated a strong field in the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot.

Inisherin faces older rivals for the first time but can take full advantage of the weight he receives from soft ground specialist Vandeek, four lengths behind the selection at Haydock on his seasonal return.

PONIROS (5.10) is taken to bounce back from a slightly disappointing effort at Royal Ascot when unable to strike a blow in the King George V Handicap.

This 1m 4f contest is less cut-throat and a reproduction of his earlier second to classy King’s Gambit in the London Gold Cup Handicap at Newbury would put Poniros firmly in the mix.

Big fields are order of the day and five places each-way are up for grabs in the opener at York where BLUE FOR YOU (2.00) attempts to replicate last year’s wide-margin success under Danny Tudhope.

David O’Meara’s gelding made no show in the Royal Hunt Cup last month but that was also the case 12 months ago before bursting back to life on the Knavesmire. The assessor has taken a chance dropping Blue For You to a mark 4lb lower than last July.

Elnajmm made an impressive handicap debut when hosing up at Newcastle 16 days ago and can go well for the William Haggas team, despite a hefty 10lb hike in his rating.

AL QAREEM (3.45) wins a narrow vote in a competitive renewal of the 1m 6f John Smith’s Silver Cup.

Karl Burke’s gelding was by no means disgraced when running fourth to Giavellotto in the Yorkshire Cup over course and distance in May and the winner scored in emphatic style at Newmarket on Thursday.

Al Qareem had reopposing Salt Bay a short head away in third when losing out narrowly to Hamish at Newbury in April and is now 3lb better off with that rival.

The Haggas yard mopped up this event with Hamish last summer and the yard hold live prospects this time round with Klondike.

The four-year-old handled some juice underfoot when pipping Salt Bay over course and distance four weeks ago.

At Ascot, BOLSTER (2.20) can go well at decent odds in the Summer Mile which is run on the round course.

The Burke-trained four-year had his hat-trick bid thwarted when running fourth in a Group 3 contest at the Curragh a fortnight ago but this assignment looks a tad easier.

Unbeaten Quddwah, the probable market leader, hasn’t been seen since edging out Docklands here on the straight track at the beginning of May, while Sonny Liston lost out to Wild Tiger in a tight finish to the Royal Hunt Cup.
