Live on British Eurosport: Tue 14.30: The women’s tennis season culminates at Doha this week with the WTA Championships.
Women’s tennis has slightly underwhelmed this season – probably through the inactivity of the Williams sisters and the 2 very one sided major’s finals. Alas, 8 top quality players head to Doha to contest the finals of the WTA Championship.
Current number 1 Caroline Wozniacki leads the betting at 9/4 (Unibet) and has a good chance of taking Serena Williams’ crown. Her strength lies in her consistency and her 6 WTA titles this year shows she is very capable of winning tournaments. She did not reach a major final however.
Next in the betting, Kim Clijsters, comes in at 5/2 with Paddy Power. Arguably the best player in Doha, Clijsters has played in 5 less tournaments this year than anyone else at these finals and she still came 3rd in the rankings (minus the Williams sisters). A US Open victory is more evidence of a big game mentality.
Victoria Azarenka and Vera Zvonareva come next at 13/2 with Bet365 and bodog respectively. Azarenka is first reserve and perhaps lacks the consistency and high end quality to win this while Zvonareva has every chance in the world if she can just get her serve right over prolonged periods.
Francesca Schiavone, 18/1 (Betfred), is a good price considering her never-give-in attitude and her French Open victory this year, definitely one to watch. Elena Dementieva is next at 20/1 (Coral) but she seems to lack the mental fortitude for the big events.
Clijsters could be considered the main threat in Doha but an eye should be kept on Schiavone.
