Follow Fordaws At York At 6/1

Paul Ferguson has one selection for us on Friday evening; Firdaws in the 7.30 Listed fillies’ at York. Compare odds and bet.

York stages a really interesting Listed fillies’ contest on Friday evening, in which Firdaws (7:30) could be worth giving another chance to, after a most disappointing seasonal reappearance at Newbury in May.

Given 70 days to recover, it has to be presumed that Roger Varian’s daughter of Mr Greeley wasn’t right on the day, in a race won by one of today’s opponents Momentary.

The winner was sent off 33/1 that day, while the selection was just 3/1 and, on this quicker surface, it’s not out of the question that Firdaws could reverse form if back to her two-year-old form.

The form of that Swettenham Stud Trial has worked out really well thanks to runner-up Shirocco Star, who has since finished in second in the Epsom Oaks, third in the Ribblesdale at Ascot and again runner-up in the Irish Oaks last Sunday.

Momentary is, therefore, greatly respected, but she too arrives with questions to answer after flopping in the Ribblesdale and she needs to prove that Newbury run wasn’t a one-off.

As a juvenile Firdaws was beaten on debut, having been well-touted beforehand, but soon got off the mark at Salisbury before finishing third in the Group 1 Fillies’ Mile when she looked a fine prospect for middle-distance contests at three.

The returning Elas Diamond adds another dimension to an intriguing race, while Luca Cumani’s Emirates Queen really impressed me when winning a Doncaster maiden over this trip four weeks ago. At the time of writing (Thursday lunchtime) there are no prices available but, being the lowest rated filly in the race, she ought to be a bit of value in the contest, but Firdaws gets the nod in the hope she bounces back to her Group race form of last year.

Friday’s selection:
7:30 York Firdaws
