Fergie’s Haydock double

Paul Ferguson has two selections from Haydock for us on Wednesday; Karazhan in the 15.40 and Straidnahanna and 16.50. Compare odds and bet.

Haydock stages a decent midweek card on Wednesday and Nicky Henderson’s sole runner Karazhan (3:40) is worth supporting in the 32Red.com Handicap Hurdle.

The Dr Fong gelding will relish the drying ground and remains on a mark from which he can win a handicap such as this. A speedy individual, 2m around here ought to be ideal and David Bass’ mount was available at 4/1 with Bet365 and Bet Victor overnight.

Later on the card Straidnahanna (4:40) is given the chance to atone for a recent pulled-up in the 2m4f ‘fixed brush’ novices’ hurdle.

Sue Smith’s likeable grey has twice run over today’s course-and-distance and clearly enjoys the unique obstacles. Fourth behind Spirit Of Shankly, Urban Hymn and Classic Move in a warm event at the Betfair meeting in November, he gave the useful Wuff a real fright here on his penultimate start, going down by a short-head.

Both first and second disappointed in the Prestige Novices’ Hurdle here last month, but the ground was awful that day and any horse can be excused a poor run in the circumstances. If he comes back to his earlier form, the five-year-old holds strong claims, in receipt of 7lbs from his main market rivals.

Wednesday’s selections:
3:40 Haydock: Karazhan; 9/2 Stan James
4:50 Haydock: Straidnahanna; 10/3 Betfred
