Fergie’s Festive Trio

Paul Ferguson three selections for us on Tuesday; Imagine The Chat (12:50) and Stilletto (2.35) at Newbury and The Grey Taylor in the 1.10 at Doncaster. Compare odds and bet.

Given the form of his winning chase debut at Catterick earlier in the month Stilletto (2:35) is fancied to follow up at Newbury on Tuesday.

Paul Nicholls’ head-strong six-year-old jumped well in the main (particularly when seeing a stride) when beating Amore Alato by a length-and-a-quarter.  The runner-up would probably have won a Grade 2 at Ascot recently, but for a final fence fall, and the drop in trip should be in the selection’s favour.

The Westerner gelding again sports a hood and, with the likely testing ground unlikely to inconvenience him, he can make it two from two under Sam Twiston-Davies.

Also at Newbury, in the earlier novices’ handicap chase Imagine The Chat (12:50) is worth siding with in a competitive looking field.

Rebecca Curtis has her horses in much better order now and this is a much more suitable trip (than debut).  The imposing son of Kayf Tara remains potentially well handicapped and a much better run can be expected this afternoon.

Up at Doncaster, another novice handicapper to back is The Grey Taylor (1:10) who won well at Carlisle on his second start over fences, back in October.

Brian Ellison’s grey had earlier travelled powerfully when fourth over 2m3½f at Wetherby, in a race that has worked out really well since (Southfield Royale finished runner-up).

Today’s 2m trip is right up his street and a mark of 136 seems more than fair.  Richard Johnson again takes the ride and he has been aboard for all three of the horses victories under rules.

Earlier on the card Chap is one to note in the national hunt novices’ hurdle, but he needs to leave behind a disappointing reappearance at Cheltenham and this looks a fairly warm event.  He had created a big impression when winning an Aintree bumper on his rules debut, however, and remains an potentially useful prospect for Dan Skelton.  He would be of interest if available at an each-way price.

Tuesday’s selections:

12:50 Newbury: Imagine The Chat

1:10 Doncaster: The Grey Taylor

2:35 Newbury: Stilletto
