WORLD CUP PREVIEW: The Daily Star’s Danny Fullbrook previews the last eight and takes Brazil, Argentina, Spain to hit the bookies hard with Ghana the only side likley to cause an upset
Quarter Finals Betting Preview
The World Cup now gets serious, so the advice had also better be right. There are some massive names still in the competition, but the pick of the last eight for me is Germany against Argentina.
It is all about attack because both defences are brittle. Germany’s performance of the tournament has already come against England, so I think this young squad will fold under the pressure after a bright start so I like Germany/Argentina half-time/full-time at 25-1 with Miroslav Klose as first goalscorer.
Brazil look on fire at the moment and they will take some stopping. The Dutch can technically do it but Luis Fabiano is in blistering form and this is not the Robinho we saw at Manchester City. I take Robbie as first goalscorer at around 6/1, and if they get up another head of steam Holland could be in trouble.
Spain have hardly hit the ground running, but they will have enough to deal with Paraguay, but outside of David Villa, goals have been a problem. Nevertheless, I like the look of Xavi as first goalscorer at 16/1; he always goes close.
The final quarter could supply the surprise. Most people, bookies included, feel that a Diego Forlan inspired team will beat Ghana. But the Africans will have a lot of support and they have proved a tight compact unit.
They are still 11/4 to win the game outright which is great, given Uruguay are hardly world beaters, and Ghana 2-0 is a tantalising 14/1 which looks attractive. It would be great to see an African team in the semi-final.
