Bookies Totesport breathed a sigh of relief after Ballabriggs landed the Grand National from the Sam Waley-Cohen’s Oscar Time.
The layers had expected Don’t Push It to be sent off favourite for the big race but last year’s winner proved to be extremely easy to back as punters plumped for The Midnight Club who was well-supported in the market, eventually going off the 15/2 favourite having opened up at 9/1.
“The McCain factor at Aintree ensured that Ballabriggs was always going to be popular but a victory for both Oscar Time and The Midnight Club would have been far worse and in the end it was a reasonable result for the bookies,” said totesport spokesman George Primarolo.
Ballabriggs has been installed as the 16/1 favourite for next year’s Grand National by totesport with this year’s runner-up Oscar Time next in the market at 20/1.
2012 John Smith’s Grand National – totesport bet: 16 Ballabriggs, 20 Oscar Time, 25 Don’t Push It, 33 Always Waining, Niche Market, State Of Play.
