Five to follow on Saturday

Alan Thomson, the former Racing Editor at the Daily Record, puts up five tips at Goodwood and Newmarket on Saturday. View selections below.

THIKRIYAAT (4.30) is the one to beat in the Doom Bar Celebration Mile at Goodwood.

Sir Michael Stoute’s three-year-old ran a stormer at Royal Ascot when chasing home Ribchester, an emphatic winner subsequently in the Jacques Le Marois at Deauville. Lightning Spear (ninth) and Arod (tenth) reoppose and they should get closer back on home soil and a faster track.

Thikriyaat continued his progression by edging out Forge in a Group 3 at Glorious Goodwood and should hold too many guns for principal rival Zonderland, a narrow winner over Master The World in the Group3 Sovereign Stakes at Salisbury.

Toormore shoulders a penalty but is a very good horse on his day. However, he finished three lengths behind Ribchester in the Sussex Stakes and looks held by Thikriyaat on a line through Richard Fahey’s three-year-old.

Stoute saddles another fancied runner PLATITUDE (3.55) in the March Stakes over 1m 6f.

His three-year-old gelding ran below par when only eighth to Ulysses in the Gordon Stakes here last month but his earlier second to Housesofparliament in the Bahrain Trophy at Newmarket stamped him as a progressive sort.

Throw in another fine effort when second to Primitivo in the King George V Stakes and Platitude should be very competitive.

Mr Singh is struggling to recapture last season’s form when lifting the Bahrain Trophy but isn’t one to write off under Frankie Dettori.

At a much juicer price, consistent REX IMPERATOR (3.20) can reward an each-way interest in the Revival Stakes, a Class 2 handicap over seven furlongs.

David O’Meara’s gelding has course form, grabbing third spot behind Shady McCoy and Twin Sails in a blanket finish last month.

He again just missed out in a furious finish to the Great St Wilfrid consolation race at Ripon last time and stall 10 isn’t too much of an inconvenience around the bend.

GUNS OF LEROS (5.40) has been brought along steadily by Gary Moore and is starting to fulfil his potential since being stepped up in trip.

He was just too strong for Visage Blanc over today’s distance of 12 furlongs at Salisbury and Hector Crouch’s 5lb claim ensures he meets that rival on slightly more advantageous terms. Guns Of Leros had earlier chased home Athlon at Windsor over 10 furlongs and the winner went in again at Kempton in midweek.

The Channel 4 cameras are also at Newmarket and YORKIDDING (3.35) should run his usual honest race in the 1m 5f handicap.

Joe Fanning makes the trip to HQ and Yorkidding already holds verdicts over two of his main rivals, Masterpaver and Walpole. His fourth to Barsanti at York eight days ago suggests Yorkidding is holding his form well over a busy spell.
