Five to follow on Saturday

Alan Thomson, the former Racing Editor at the Daily Record, puts up five tips at Warwick and Kempton on Saturday. View selections below.

TIDAL FLOW (2.25) can extend his unbeaten run the Ballymore Leamington Novices’ Hurdle at Warwick. The Philip Hobbs-trained gelding made a winning reappearance at Kempton in November and stepped up again at Newbury the following month when proving too strong for Nicky Henderson’s odds-on favourite Downtown Getaway (pair clear). Soft ground is preferable, so any significant rain would be a bonus.

ROCKY’S TREASURE (1.50) lines up against a trio of smart rivals in the three-mile novices’ chase but is more than capable of adding to his impressive tally of four wins from five starts. His only defeat came at the hands of Santini at Newbury when the track was riding softer than ideal. White Moon looks overpriced as the outsider of four. Colin Tizzard has pencilled-in the RSA Chase at Cheltenham as his possible big target in March, with stamina to prove. The imposing grey had the speed to score with plenty in hand over two miles at Exeter, having previously chased home useful Defi Du Seuil at the same track, and has won over 2m 5f in Irish point-to-points.

LUNGARNO PALACE (3.35) has been running as if the longer 3m 1f Pertemps Network Handicap Hurdle trip will suit. The gelding stayed on well up the Cheltenham hill over 2m 5f when finishing third to well-handicapped Speedo Boy in mid-November and was a good second on his previous visit to Warwick.

ERICK LE ROUGE (2.40) looks a bit of each-way value in the Unibet Lanzarote Handicap Hurdle at Kempton. The top weight is chasing a four-timer and did it the hard way over course and distance on Boxing Day, kicking on at the sixth flight and repelling all challengers. Kloud Gate has mopped up two modest contests and has paid the penalty with a whopping 19lb rise. Gary Moore’s gelding ran well at Royal Ascot in the summer and may still have something up his sleeve.

BARNEY DWAN (3.15) appears quite well treated on the back of his recent third to Yala Enki at Bangor and should go close in the Unibet Handicap Chase. The gelding may be more at home on this right-handed track as he strolled home by 15 lengths in a novice chase at Market Rasen last December under these conditions.
