Five to follow on Saturday

Alan Thomson, the former Racing Editor at the Daily Record, puts up five tips at Musselburgh and Kempton on Saturday. View selections below.

SIR CHAUVELIN (3.35) can keep the tasty £62, 250 first prize on home soil by bagging the Queen’s Cup for Jim Goldie at Musselburgh.

The gelding is at his best on fast ground, as he proved at Glorious Goodwood last summer when beating Melting Dew and Hochfeld over today’s 1m 6f trip. Sir Chauvelin was very unlucky not to scoop the Duke Of Edinburgh Handicap at Royal Ascot earlier in the season, being denied an opening before closing down fast on winner Dash Of Spice. Sir Chauvelin looked decidedly ring-rusty on his seasonal return at Doncaster when last of six to Red Verdon but will surely strip a lot sharper. At double-digit odds, he is worth an each-way punt.

Austrian School ran numerous good races in defeat last season and looks nailed on to go close. Mark Johnston’s stayer was beaten a neck by Timoshenko over course and distance, attempting to concede a massive 22lb to Sir Mark Prescott’s winner. Third horse Artarmon re-opposes but has six lengths to make up on Austrian School, an excellent third to Ghostwatch and Mekong on his final start in a Listed event at Ascot. He hasn’t been done any favours emerging from the widest berth in stall 14, which is typical of his luck..Johnston saddles four in the race, all with chances.

The Scottish Sprint Cup was run in June last year but has an earlier slot in the calendar in 2019. Paul Midgley is a dab hand in these events and runs three, the pick of which may be LINE OF REASON (3.00). The gelding arrives here fighting fit following his running-on second to Teruntum Star at Beverley on Wednesday and has a rails pitch. Royal Brave runs the track well and can hit the frame, with many bookmakers offering five places.

It’s very much a case of Groundhog Day in the Musselburgh opener, with PORTH SWTAN (1.50) bidding to confirm recent course and distance form with trail-blazing runner-up Raselasad, third home Hayadh and fourth Three Saints Bay. Porth Swtan was given a fine stalking ride that day from stall two and he has drawn the inside position this time. An action replay is on the cards.

Hugo Palmer sends ON THE LINE (2.25) across the border with a big shout in the Royal Mile Handicap. His blinkered gelding followed up a convincing Lingfield victory with a solid second to Absolutio at Redcar and he may be better suited by this turning track. William Haggas is always to be feared when he sends one up from Newmarket and Politicise is sure to prove popular with his Scottish followers. Reggae Runner has been in fine form and is another to consider.

Haggas will probably remain closer to home as his promising filly RAINBOW HEART (2.35) goes in the Conditions Stakes at Kempton. She made all and stretched eight lengths clear at the line on her only start at Newmarket last October and runner-up Pytilia won a Lingfield maiden last month.
