Fergie’s Saturday treble

Paul Ferguson three selections, for us on Saturday; Fox Chairman in the 1.50 at Newbury; Longhouse Sale in the Market Rasen 2.10 and Withhold in the Newbury 2.25. Compare odds and bet.

Following a couple of promising runs, when not exactly getting the best of runs, Fox Chairman (1:50) returns to Newbury – where he won his maiden back in April – and can land the Listed Steventon Stakes.

Andrew Balding’s Kingman colt certainly could have enjoyed a bit more luck in the Hampton Court Stakes at Royal Ascot last month, where he ran a sound race behind Sangarius, in the circumstances. Returning to Newbury really ought to suit, with the long home straight likely to bring out the best in him once again.

Last year’s Northumberland Plate winner Withhold (2:25) is the one to be with the in valuable Marsh Cup, over 2m.

Since that brilliant display, Roger Charlton’s six-year-old has only been sighted once, when only eighth in a trial for the Melbourne Cup and he was a recent non-runner, back at Newcastle in this year’s Plate. With that in mind, he ought to have been ready for a couple of weeks now (which is a positive in terms of this being his first run since October) and he proved that he can go well fresh, when winning last year’s Plate on his first start of the season.

8lbs higher than when successful in that, this is his first start since a wind-op and wouldn’t look as strong an event, so there is hope that he can defy the rise.

Switching codes and Market Rasen stages their valuable summer jumps card, where the unbeaten Longhouse Sale (2:10) is fancied to strike for Dan and Harry Skelton in the Listed Summer Hurdle.

The five-year-old – who won an Irish Point for Sam Curling – won one of his four bumpers at this course and hasn’t broken sweat to win all three starts over hurdles. The handicapper has taken a stab by giving him a mark of 141 and whilst it wouldn’t appear to be a really lenient opening mark, I do feel that he could be better than a summer jumper. If that is the case, he is likely to make a bold bid, despite shouldering top-weight.

Saturday’s selections:
1:50 Newbury – Fox Chairman; 5/4 Unibet
2:10 Market Rasen – Longhouse Sale; 4/1 betvictor
2:25 Newbury – Withhold; 6/1 Betway
