Fergie’s Saturday double

Paul Ferguson two selections for us on Saturday; Corgi in the Goodwood 2.25 and Buzz in the 4.05 at Doncaster. Compare odds|

Goodwood’s 1m6f Qatar Summer Handicap looks a really competitive affair, in which I’m siding with Hughie Morrison’s Corgi (2:25) who steps up in trip, following two solid efforts in two really strong 1m4f handicaps.

Fourth behind Baghdad in the Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes, he had earlier finished third in the Jorvik Stakes at York and he ran really well at this meeting 12 months ago, when runner-up behind Soto Sizzler. He did step up to this sort of trip in the Melrose after Goodwood last year – after which he underwent a wind-op – and he looks ready for the step back up in distance.

Despite only having won once from 10 starts (did beat recent Chester winner Infrastructure on that occasion), his form is rock-solid and he looks sure to go well again.

Of the opposition, Outbox was a horse I liked a lot prior to the season and he did little wrong on his return in France. A shade disappointing at Newmarket last month, it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if he bounced back and also went close.

Up at Doncaster, Corgi’s stable-mate Buzz (4:05) finally gets his conditions once again in the extended 1m2f handicap, and can complete a valuable double for the Morrison stable.

A winner under similar conditions at Newbury last September, he looked to need the run on his reappearance, before finding the trip too long in Listed company when last seen. He travelled really well that day, suggesting that he remains on a fair mark, and he ought to relish the long home straight on easy ground.

Over in Ireland, Exit Poll looks the one to beat in Galway’s opening maiden hurdle, but the Leopardstown bumper winner is likely to be priced up accordingly, so could be one to watch with the future in mind. He finished runner-up to Zero Ten (a winner here earlier in the week) at last year’s meeting and has been absent since Boxing Day, when he had Sempo (15-length winner next time, before finishing sixth in the Champion Bumper) and Allaho (maiden hurdle winner next time and twice placed in Grade 1 company) in behind.

Saturday’s selections:
2:25 Glorious Goodwood – Corgi; 5/1 William Hill
4:05 Doncaster – Buzz; 5/1 Paddy Power
