Five to follow on Saturday

Alan Thomson, the former Racing Editor at the Daily Record, puts up five tips at Ascot, Redcar and Newmarket on Saturday. View selections below.

DAKOTA GOLD (2.00) has been a money-spinner in handicap sprints this summer and he can prove hard to catch in the Rous Stakes at Ascot.

Michael Dods sent him to Newbury to contest a Group 3 contest last month and Dakota Gold didn’t appear entirely at home on the good to firm ground, finishing a close second to Maid In India. Back on a slower surface here Dakota Gold can resume winning ways, despite having to concede 3lb and more to his rivals. Danzeno chased him home in a Listed sprint at York earlier in the season and may have to play second fiddle again.

MORANDO (2.35) left some hefty bets behind when just outbattled by Technician in the Geoffrey Freer Stakes at Newbury but he had 12 lengths in hand of subsequent winner Sextant back in fourth. Sextant re-opposes but Andrew Balding’s Morando can stamp his class over bigger threats Faylaq and Vivid Diamond, with Silvestre De Sousa back on the big stage following injury.

All the usual suspects turn up for the bet365 Challenge Cup, a rip-roaring handicap over seven furlongs. Last year’s winner Raising Sand has 12lb more on his back following another successful campaign and similar cases can be made for Ripp Orf, Kynren, Escobar and soft-ground York winner Bedouin’s Story. Away from the main protagonists, a chance is taken on BATTERED (3.10), not knocked about on either of his starts this season, the most recent coming at Newmarket when a close fourth to Dubai Legacy. Battered is trained by Ralph Beckett but won on the soft for previous handler William Haggas. With six places ew on offer in places, Battered could go close under De Sousa.

SUMMER SANDS (2.45) stands out in the Two Year Old Trophy at Redcar. Richard Fahey’s colt produced a career-best third to Earthlight and Golden Horde in the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes last Saturday and is a good thing to scoop the £100,000 first prize if handling the forecast heavy ground.

CANTON QUEEN (5.10) carries top weight in the fillies’ handicap which brings down the curtain on an excellent Newmarket card. Trainer Richard Hughes has been firing in a few winners following a rare quiet spell and Canton Queen, a daughter of Shamardal, put up a good fight when chasing home John Gosden’s She’s Got You at Ascot in early September. That winner came out to run the older Agincourt to a neck in a Listed contest here last week.
