Rory McIlroy produced a fantastic performance to win the Canadian Open last week and the Northern Irishman has leapt to the head of the US Open betting market. William Hill have 11/1 that the 33-year-old returns to the major winners’ enclosure by landing a victory at Brookline.
It was 2011 when McIlroy won his first and only US Open title, although there have now been three consecutive top ten performances in this tournament, with the Ryder Cup hero likely to have his backers.
Justin Thomas was breathing down McIlroy’s neck at St George’s Golf and Country Club, with the American having recently won the PGA Championship and Ladbrokes have 12/1 about a player who now has two major titles under his belt and looks virtually certain to be in contention.
Having also tied eighth in the Masters this season, Thomas is certainly one for the shortlist and the same applies to Scottie Scheffler who is the world number one. The Masters champion surprisingly missed the cut at the PGA Championship although his previous form had been blistering and the bookies are taking no chances about a player who has won multiple times this year. BetVictor have 14/1 about the American doubling his major tally.
Jon Rahm arrives at Brookline as the defending champion and 2021 was an amazing year considering the Spaniard posted a top ten finish in each of the four major tournaments. His 2022 form leaves something to be desired although the European tasted victory as recently as early May when landing the spoils at the Mexican Open. William Hill have 16/1 and that could end up looking like a big price.
As always, there are plenty of American golfers trading near the top of the market and that includes Xander Schauffele who is a 25/1 poke with BetVictor, with Jordan Spieth chalked up at 25/1 with Betfred and much depends on whether the Texan’s putter is hot during the final rounds of the competition.
Patrick Cantlay was able to win the Zurich Classic with Xander Schauffele and perhaps the 30-year-old is ready to break into the big time, with William Hill having 28/1 about someone who lost to Scottie Scheffler and Jordan Spieth in PGA tournament play-offs in 2022.
Cameron Smith has been knocking on the door when it comes to golfing majors for some time. The Australian has time on his side and Betfred have 22/1 available that he produces some magic at Brookline, with the 28-year-old having tied for third in the Masters and tied thirteenth in the PGA Championship.
