Alan Thomson, the former Racing Editor at the Daily Record, puts up five tips at Glorious Goodwood and Thirsk on Saturday. View selections below.
STRIKE RED (3.05) appeals as a lively each-way bet in the 28-runner Coral Stewards’ Cup on the final day of Glorious Goodwood.
Richard Fahey’s gelding, a winner in the mud last October, wasn’t beaten far in sixth place here 12 months ago and races off the same mark from a high draw on the near side.
Strike Red did best of those horses drawn in double digits at York last Saturday, finishing sixth behind re-opposing Elmonjed. The William Haggas-trained winner is now burdened with a 6lb penalty which may not prevent another bold show.
Last year’s trailblazing winner Get It can go close racing off a 6lb higher rating, with another high stall position possibly in his favour.
FRENCH DUKE (1.55), a beaten favourite on his return to action at Royal Ascot, will strip sharper in the 1m 6f Coral Summer Handicap.
Roger Varian’s four-year-old ran into an improving stayer in The Reverend at Ascot last September and doesn’t look badly treated.
Sam Hawkens reeled in a solid handicapper at Hamilton last time and is on the upgrade for the Haggas yard.
Galashiels has plenty of solid form on deep ground in France and can go well at a big price on his second start for Nicky Henderson.
With 14 runners declared, most firms go four places each-way.
It will be interesting to note how DANIELLE (2.30) performs in the betting market on her return to action in the 1m 6f Lillie Langtry Stakes, a Group 2 contest confined to fillies and mares.
John and Thady Gosden’s four-year-old finished runner-up twice on deep ground last season and is joined in the nine-runner line-up by stablemate Sueno, a solid second behind a Godolphin hot-pot (pair clear) at Newmarket in July.
Term Of Endearment won this race last year when trained by Henry de Bromhead and she was beaten a head by Scenic at York on her first start for William Haggas.
Goodie Two Shoes, running in the JP McManus hoops, is on a four-timer and features near the top of the betting.
ALPHA CRUCIS (4.55) boasts a 1-3-1-1 record from four starts at Goodwood (all on soft ground) and Colin Keane is a notable booking by Gary and Josh Moore in the 1m 1f handicap.
Their gelding made a satisfactory seasonal debut when finding only one too strong at Epsom’s Derby fixture and looks sure to be in the shake-up.
Gladius, a lightly-raced three-year-old hailing from the Andrew Balding yard, has the services of William Buick competing off a handy-looking weight.
CRUYFF TURN (4.05), fourth in a hot renewal of the Thirsk Hunt Cup in early May, can go close on a return visit to the Yorkshire track for the 7f William Hill Price Boost Handicap.
Tim Easterby’s gelding was given a short break following another solid run at Redcar in June when giving best to a well-backed rival.
Rythm Master finds it hard to win but has performed with credit in several warm handicaps, including here, and can hit the frame under Silvestre De Sousa. Several firms go four places ew.
Tally Ho
