Windsor this evening and no surprise to see Mumford step back up in trip for Richard Hannon having looked in need of at least an extra furlong when outpaced early but running on into second at Haydock Park last time. He has the plum draw in stall one but has been beaten at 9/4 and 6/4 and is no star.

Atletico is of interest first time out but I am going to take a chance on Fingal’s Cave (6.20) despite the fact that he is drawn on the far side of the track for Mick Channon and Willie Twiston-Davies. The stable’s juveniles invariably come on for their initial experience and this son of Fast Company was only beaten a length at Leicester on debut. Had he had a decent draw he would be something to bet on but his draw will be factored into his price and he gets the vote.

Tenor will do well to follow up his recent Kempton win under a 6lb penalty given he might find it hard to get to the lead from his modest draw in stall ten. His young apprentice takes off a valuable 7lbs and is unbeaten on the horse but Unison also likes to lead and preference is for Ogbourne Downs (7.50) who should have the race run to suit and has only been raised 2lbs for a win at Bath last time back at a mile.

John Gosden had a mixed weekend with his fillies’ and mares’ with The Fugue disappointing in the Eclipse but he did saddle the 1-2 in the Lancashire Oaks. His Swiss Kiss must run well in the fillies’ maiden as must Patterned although the latter is likely to need further and is one to consider when handicapping over a trip. The selection must be the Jeremy Noseda-trained Dreaming Beauty who finished with a flourish when runner up at Goodwood on debut over today’s trip and cost 200,000 Guineas as a yearling.

I like progressive 3-year-olds against their elders at this time of the season and Golden Journey (8.50) is only 4lb higher than when scoring at Goodwood last time (well backed) and is taken to follow up.

At Newton Abbot Vesperal Dream will be all the rage for the Beginners’ Chase for Paul Nicholls but he has not been a natural over the larger obstacles and Luci Di Mezzanotte (2.45) jumped well when runner up to a decent sort on her chase debut back in May and AP McCoy takes over this afternoon.

There is a valuable Handicap Chase and Ballybough Gorta is beginning to look very well handicapped for Peter Bowen but the same can be said of Sherriff Hutton (3.45) at the foot of the weights for a trainer, Martin Hill, who certainly knows his job. The selection reverts to fences off a very attractive mark compared to his rating over hurdles and the booking of Tom Scudamore would suggest a bold bid is expected.

Grey Blue (4.15) makes his handicap debut from a lowly mark and his recent second at Worcester, beaten a length, was in a decent time with the third beaten a further 13 lengths. Trainer Nicky Henderson has few horses rated 115 in his care but this inmate is only four and is entitled to improve with experience although good or faster ground is essential.
