Stan James make Cheltenham Gold Cup holder Long Run their 4/9 fav ahead of Saturday’s Denman Chase at Newbury.
StanJames.com spokesman Rory Jiwani says, “This should be a confidence booster for Long Run after his two defeats this season at the hands of Kauto Star. He is the 4/9 favourite with Gold Cup fourth What A Friend next best at 5/1.
“Burton Port’s last run was second in the 2010 Hennessy and he makes his long-awaited comeback on Saturday in preparation for a tilt at the Grand National. Nicky Henderson’s eight-year-old has not finished out of the front two over fences and he is 10/1 for Saturday’s race along with Alan King’s Medermit and Tidal Bay.
“The Giant Bolster is an interesting contender at 12/1 after his facile success at Cheltenham while Carruthers looks a good each-way bet at 20/1 after winning the Hennessy at Newbury in November.
“In the Grade 2 Super Saturday Chase, also known as the Game Spirit, novices head the betting with Arkle antepost favourite Sprinter Sacre even money and Cue Card next best at 5/2.
“Paul Nicholls’ Champion Chase hopeful Hold Fast is available at 7/2 after his comfortable win at Sandown last time out with Stagecoach Pearl 10/1 and last year’s winner French Opera a 12/1 shot.
“And in the Betfair Hurdle, Zarkandar is the 3/1 favourite as he makes his seasonal debut after winning the Triumph last year. Paul Nicholls says he will come on for the run but a good run is expected as he gears up for a tilt at Hurricane Fly in the Stan James Champion Hurdle.
“Raya Star is 7/1 for Alan King with Supreme hope Darlan 9/1 and Sir Alex Ferguson’s Empire Levant among a host of horses on 12/1.”
