Five to follow on Saturday

Alan Thomson, the former Racing Editor at the Daily Record, puts up five tips at Sandown, Lingfield, and Southwell on Saturday. View selections below.

GUSTAVIAN (3.05) can prove the pick of three Anthony Honeyball runners in the three-mile Unibet Veterans’ Handicap Chase at Sandown.

The 11-year-old returned from a wind operation to rout his rivals with a bold front-running performance in the Badger Beer Chase at Wincanton in early November and can cope with an 8lb rise.

Stablemate Credo finished a well-held third on that occasion but is entitled to get closer at these revised weights.

Annsam made all when scoring by more than nine lengths at Ludlow and can go well, as should Warwick winner Nocte Volatus.

With a couple of confirmed front-runners going to post there should be no hanging about in the 2m Unibet-sponsored handicap chase. There is the possibility that Ascot victor Keep Running (raised 11lb) and free-going Siam Park will set up the race for a closer and GABRIEL’S GETAWAY (12.45) may be the chief beneficiary.

Anthony Honeyball’s gelding makes a quick reappearance after stumbling and unseating rider at Kempton’s first fence a week ago and a repeat of his fourth to Calico at Ascot in November, when finishing just ahead of re-opposing Kotmask, would make him competitive at decent odds.

JET PLANE (1.50) is ready for take-off in the Veterans’ Handicap Chase.

The Dan Skelton-trained top weight drew clear for a seven lengths victory at Leicester on his latest outing and gets the nod over Triple Trade and Can You Call, both winners of similar restricted contests at Cheltenham in recent weeks.

The cold snap is playing havoc with the fixture list so it is probably prudent to include a couple of all-weather selections.

On the Polytrack at Lingfield, frustrating WAY TO DUBAI (1.10) is eased slightly in grade by Mick Appleby following a close-up third in stronger company here three days ago.

At Southwell, QUANDARY (5.30) catches the eye in the BetMGM fillies’ handicap having been eased 2lb by the grader.

She produced a solid fourth here in mid-November and her latest effort at Wolverhampton can be overlooked as Ed Bethell’s top weight was hampered at the start.

Appleby’s Titian Blue will strip sharper for her Wolverhampton comeback run two weeks ago and won’t be far away.

Tally Ho
