Although Cheltenham takes centre stage on New Year’s Day, there are some excellent cards elsewhere and conditions ought to be just about perfect for THE KALOOKI KID (2:15) in the Auld Reekie at Musselburgh. 8lb higher than when successful over course-and-distance in February, he beat Saint Segal (won 3 times since and now 18lb higher) and Traprain Law (won last week’s Castleford Chase) on that occasion and decent ground on a flat track, over this sort of trip, are his optimum conditions.
Over at Fairyhouse, KAID D’AUTHIE (3:15) is taken to win the beginners chase, after an encouraging debut at Punchestown. Kitzbuhel franked that form by winning the Kauto Star, whilst the third placed The Enabler also won next time. A winner on decent ground at the Punchestown Festival, he looks a bright prospect for novice chases.
