Paul Ferguson has two selections for us on Saturday; King’s Gambit in the 3.00 at Newbury and Jasmin du Grugy in the 8.33 at Uttoxeter. | Free Bets |
The London Gold Cup at Newbury is one of the best early-season three-year-old handicaps and this year’s contest looks to be well up to scratch. The top of the market looks strong and Chantilly (holds Group-race entries) could well be a big threat for Aidan O’Brien, especially as his horses have been improving for their first start of the season, but marginal preference is for King’s Gambit (3:00) who raced exclusively in three starts at two at the Berkshire track. A winner at the second attempt, he was then narrowly denied under a penalty and both pieces of form have worked out really well already this season. The form of the Harry Charlton stable is a little concerning but he had a winner earlier in the week at Windsor and it is worth remembering that his dad Roger won this race three times in five years recently (2015, 2016 & 2019) so it has likely been a long-term target for the chestnut.
Jasmin du Grugy (8:33) seemed to relish the longer trip on his last two starts, narrowly beaten at Wincanton before winning comfortably at Ffos Las. Up 20lbs for those two likeable efforts, Anthony Honeyball’s five-year-old looks to be on a roll now and can follow-up at Uttoxeter’s evening meeting.
Saturday’s selections:
3:00 Newbury – King’s Gambit; 9/2 Bet365
8:33 Uttoxeter – Jasmin du Grugy; 11/8 William Hill
